External appearance (Morphology)
The leaves of this plant are like betel leaves. It is small, round and black in colour. Its taste is quite spicy. Its vine is long-lived. It is a very fast spreading and soft vine. Its vine grows upwards by clinging to a strong support.
It gives almost two harvests in a year. The first harvest is from August to September and the second from March to April. Two types of chillies are sold in the market. White pepper and black pepper. Some people consider white pepper to be a special variety of black pepper. Some people consider horseradish seeds to be white pepper. White pepper is a different form of black pepper. Black pepper is made from half ripe fruits and by soaking fully ripe fruits in water, mashing them with hand and removing the outer peel, it becomes white pepper. After the peel is removed, its hot effect reduces to some extent and its properties become milder.
Its plant is a bushy one that spreads on the ground. It is smooth. Its stem is round. The branches are thick and soft. Its leaves are broad, round and oval. Its half portion is shiny and thick. Its flowers are small and the pods come on their own. Its fruits are attached in bunches and are round in shape. When ripe they are yellow in colour and after drying they turn black. Its seeds are round and hard. The dried fruits are called black pepper. Its flowering period is from July to August and fruiting period is from October to February.
