It is found in all parts of India. Sushruta has used Bijak extensively in leprosy, considering it to be an anti-kapha-pitta. The use of its flowers has been described in the treatment of hemoptysis. The use of Asan has been described for the purification of contaminated water. Vagbhata has used the powder of the seed as a skin paste in the pediatric disease called Gudkuttak and Asan is used with Triphala for the prevention of fistula. The extract of Bijak is used as Hiradakkhan (bloodshed). In ancient times, it was prescribed to keep eye ointment in the vessels made from the wood of Bijak.

It is a beautiful tree growing up to about 30 meters tall. Its trunk is spreading and branched. Its trunk is dark brown in colour. Its outer layer is pink in colour. When its bark is hit or wounded, dark red coloured gum oozes out which becomes black and hard after drying. It is used after boiling and drying. It occurs in shiny pieces of dark red colour, which appear red like ruby. When it is broken, brown coloured powder comes out and when chewed, it sticks to the teeth.

Its leaves are green in colour, oval and have veins on the upper surface. Its flowers are fragrant and yellow in colour. Its pods are flat and curved. There are 1 to 3 seeds inside them. Its flowering and fruiting period is from August to October.
