Introduction of Sariva: (Introduction of Sariva)

Ṣāriva What is it? (What is Sariva)

There are many medicines in Ayurveda which are used for the treatment of diseases. Sariva is one of the medicines which is a panacea for skin disorders. Its use is also very beneficial in blood disorders.

The properties of this medicine are useful in diseases like asthma, cough, fever etc. Its root is also a strength enhancer and an aphrodisiac. Its root is also used for the treatment of weak digestion, loss of appetite, tridosha, white discharge problem and diarrhea etc.

 In many places, Lonicara japonica is used in place of Sariva (Hemidesmus indicus). Let us know in detail about its benefits and in which other diseases it is used.

External appearance (morphology) (Sariva of creation)

Hemidesmus indicus(linn.)R,Br (Sariwa)

The vines of Sariwa are long and thin and mostly spread on the ground. It grows from bottom to upwards. These vines are smooth and juicy. Its branches are long, smooth and thin. The number of branches is large. The colour of the vines is shaded brown. Sometimes there are clear hairs on these vines and sometimes not. Its roots are long and thick. The root is round, hard and is white all around. The skin of the root is brown in colour and cracks are seen along its width. There are striations along the length of the root. Its flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.

Ichnocarpus frutescens (Linn.) R.Br.(Krishna Sariva)

Krishna Sariva is considered to be a plant of the Kutja family in its root form. Its leaves are small and oval and round in length. Its root does not have any fragrance.

 Cryptolepis buchananii Roem. & Schult.(Jambu patra saariva)

It is a plant of the Araceae family. Its leaves are like jamun leaves, bright green in color and ooze milk when broken.

All three types of Sariva are used for medicinal purposes. This Sariva is most commonly used in South India.

 Decalepis hamiltonii Wight(Shalupatri sariwa)

The creepers of Shailaputri Sariva are long, smooth and bushy. It climbs from bottom to top. Its branches are very wide, thin and hard. Its leaves are oval, smooth, shiny and have thick bark. Its flowers are white in colour. Its fruits are spear-shaped, long and thin. These leaves are pointed from the front and thick at the base.

For long hair (Sariva for long hair)

  • Sariva is a panacea for those people whose hair is falling out and for growing hair longer. Its powdered form and consumption solves hair problems.

In baldness

  • The use of Anantmool is beneficial in reducing or preventing the problem of baldness because the elements found in Anantmool nourish the hair externally and internally. Which prevents baldness.

  • Grind together Sariva, lotus saffron, khus, blue lotus, manjistha, sandalwood, pathanilodhra and haritaki in equal quantities. Applying this paste also provides relief in ringworm, itching and wounds etc.
  • All types of wounds are cured by grinding the root of Sariva and applying it as a paste.

Skin disorders (Sariva for skin diseases)

  • Grind the root of Sariva with barley and soak it in water. Strain the decoction after two hours. Drinking this decoction three to four times a day cures blood and skin disorders.
  • Apart from this, consuming the powder of Sariva root with milk relieves skin disorders.

in boils

  • Mix the bark of Peepal tree and the root of Sariva and make a paste like tea and consume it. It provides relief in problems like itching, boils, pimples and heat etc.

In syphilis Ṣāriva

  • If you are very much troubled by syphilis, then drinking the decoction of this medicine is beneficial in curing syphilis.

In respiratory disease (Sariva for breathing problem)

  • Sariva is an excellent medicine for the treatment of asthma and other diseases caused by Vata. To treat asthma, mix the powder of Sariva root and Adusa leaf. Mixing this mixture with milk and consuming it in the morning and evening is beneficial in all types of respiratory problems.

Get relief from stomach pain (Sariva for stomach pain)

  • If you are suffering from stomach ache then grind the root of Sariva, mix it with water and drink it to get relief from stomach ache.

Prevents miscarriage Ṣāriva

  • If a pregnant woman is afraid of miscarriage, then consuming Sariva root is beneficial. For this, make a powder by mixing milk and sugar candy in the paste of Sariva root. Consuming this powder removes the fear of miscarriage. 
  • Apart from this, one should start drinking this paste before pregnancy. By drinking this paste from the time of pregnancy till the time of delivery, the child is born healthy and fair.

Relieve irritation

  • If there is a burning sensation on your body then by cooking the powder of this medicine with ghee and adding sugar to it and consuming it for a few days the burning sensation in the body gets relieved.

In Urine disorder (Sariva for urinary diseases)

  •   If you experience pain or burning sensation while urinating, then this medicine should be used in the following manner- Wrap the root of Sariva in a banana leaf and place it in hot ash or sand etc. When the leaf burns, take out the root and grind it with roasted cumin and sugar. Adding cow ghee to this mixture and consuming it in the morning and evening cures urine and semen related disorders.

  • Joint pain or arthritis causes pain in the joints between the bones. Consume the powder of Sariva root with honey three times a day. This is beneficial in arthritis.

To remove kidney stones  (Sariva for calculus)

  • If you have kidney stones, mix the powder of the root of this medicine with milk and consume it twice a day. The kidney stones break down and get expelled through urine.

in intestinal disorder Ṣāriva

  • Consuming the decoction of Sariva root relieves intestinal disorders.

in white discharge problem Ṣāriva

  • Most of the women are very troubled by this problem. To get relief from this, taking powder of Sariva root and consuming it in the form of decoction is beneficial in white discharge or leucorrhoea.

In Jaundice (Sariva for jaundice)

  • Grind the powder of the root bark of Sariva and black pepper with water. Drinking this mixture continuously for seven days removes the yellowness of the eyes and body. It also removes the problem of loss of appetite and fever due to jaundice.

1. Eliminate fever (Sariva for fever)

  • Fever is a common problem due to change of weather. To get relief from this, use of this medicine is very beneficial.
  • If you are suffering from any type of fever, prepare a decoction by taking equal quantities of Sariva root, Khas, dry ginger, kutki and nagarmotha. Cook this decoction until some portion remains. Drinking the decoction prepared in this way cures all types of fever.

In Typhoid (Sariva for typhoid)

  • Make a decoction by taking equal quantities of parwal leaves, sariva, nagarmotha, patha and kutki. Consuming this cures typhoid.

in the bloodthirsty (Sariva for blood bile)

  • A person suffering from hematemesis should grind sariva, red lotus and blue lotus separately with milk. Mixing these three together and putting them drop by drop in the nose will soon stop the bleeding from the nose and ears.
