External form (Morphology) (Varahi kand ki akriti)

This beautiful creeper is found in the Himalayan regions of India up to a height of about 1850 meters during rainy season, spreading on the roadside trees. Its tuber contains small fibers which look like the hair of a Varah (pig), so it is called Varahi tuber. In the axis of its leaf, there is a leaf bud which is brown in color and round, from which new plants emerge. It is also called Vayu tuber. It is eaten by boiling or roasting.

Its tuber is not particularly large. It looks like a pig's mouth, thick on one side and thin on the other, firm, covered with dense long hairs, white in colour from the inside and black or muddy-brown on the outside. When it is cut or scratched with a nail, milk oozes out of it. It is bitter and pungent in taste. Its fruiting and flowering period is from July to December.

Dioscorea pentaphylla linn. – (Panchpatri Varahikand)

It has a climbing vine like a varhi. Small thorns are found at the base of the stems. Male and female flowers are found in separate clusters. Its tubers are long, dark, grey or black in colour and have hairs. The tubers are used in the treatment of all body pain, constipation, dysentery, pain and swelling.
