What is Sonapatha? (What is Sonapatha?)

Very few people know about Shyonak or Sonapatha. This medicine has been in use in Ayurveda since ancient times. This medicine can be used to cure different types of diseases. It is also used in Vrihat Panchmool in Ayurveda. This medicine mainly cures Kapha and Vata.

Morphology of Sonapatha

Its tree is of medium size. Its bark is soft and appears to be light brown in colour. Its leaves are large. The outer part of its flowers is purple in colour and the inner part is somewhat reddish pink in colour. Its fruits are large, sword-shaped, in the form of pointed pods. The seeds are flat and are quite numerous in quantity. Its flowers bloom from June to August and fruits bloom from October to May.

Medicinal Benefits and Usages of Sonapatha

Sonapatha for diarrhea

  • If you have a problem of diarrhea and it is not getting cured, then you can consume the bark of this medicine and the decoction made from the bark of a medicine called Kutaj. By consuming this, you will soon see good results in diarrhea.
  • If the juice extracted from Sonapatha and Indrajau leaves is mixed with Moch juice and consumed in diarrhoea, then it is beneficial. One teaspoon of this juice can be considered as the appropriate amount.
  • If the powder made from the gum of this medicine is consumed with milk, then it can provide relief from diarrhea.
  • If the decoction made from the root bark of the medicine is consumed in appropriate quantity, it can stop diarrhoea.

Sonapatha for jaundice

  • Soak the crushed bark of the medicine in a glass of water overnight. In the morning, make powder of two camphor tablets and swallow it on an empty stomach. After about 20 minutes, filter the water and drink it. Take breakfast or food after about 120 minutes. This method of intake can also change on the basis of the chronicity and age of the patient, which is as follows-
  • For children aged 8-15 years – One tablet of camphor (50mg) and Shyonak bark (75-100 grams)
  • For children below 8 years of age – Camphor tablet (25 mg) and Shyonak bark (40-50 grams)
  • For 8 day old baby – Camphor drops (one drop) and Shyonak (6 drops, give only once)
  • If the jaundice is more chronic then it should be consumed for a maximum of 7 days.

Beneficial in joint pain (Sonapatha for joints pain)

  • If the decoction of the root of this medicine and dried ginger is taken in the morning, evening and afternoon for joint pains, it can help in curing joint pain caused by arthritis, rheumatism or other reasons.
  • In case of joint pain, its leaves should be heated and tied on the affected area. This provides relief from pain. 

Sonapatha for asthma and cough

  • If the powder of Sonapatha is mixed with ginger juice and honey and consumed, it provides relief in asthma. Apart from this, if you take the powder made from the gum of this medicine with milk, it also provides relief in cough.

In disorders of the spleen (Sonapatha for spleen disease)

  • In case of disorders related to spleen, if decoction made from the leaves of this medicine is consumed then it is beneficial.

Sonapatha for cold

  • If smoking is done with substances like fennel, cinnamon, bala's root, shionak, castor etc. then relief can be gained from cold.

Get rid of fever (Sonapatha for fever)

  • If water is filled in a wooden cup made from the bark of Shyonak at night and consumed in the morning, it provides great relief from malarial fever.

Solve the problem of piles (Sonapatha for piles)

  • Grind medicinal bark, root of Chitrak, Indrajau, Karanja bark, dry ginger in equal quantity and make powder. If this powder is taken with buttermilk two to three times a day, it provides relief in piles or hemorrhoids.

Soothe mouth ulcers (Sonapatha for mouth ulcers)

  • The ulcers can be soothed by making a decoction of the root of this medicine and gargling with it.

Sonapatha for post pregnancy

  • For women who are experiencing severe pain after delivery, take pills made from Shyonak and other substances along with Dashmool Kwath. Taking these for a few days relieves both weakness and pain.
